For the third consecutive year, Thessaloniki experiences one of the most solemn moments of Holy Week, as five Epitaph processions from historic churches in the city center gather on the evening of Good Friday at Aristotelous Square.
The Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki announces that, as part of the sacred services of Holy and Great Week, the established meeting of the Epitaph processions will take place again this year, on Good Friday, April 10, 2026, at 21:30, in the heart of the city.
Earlier that same evening, at 19:30, the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, His Eminence Philotheos, will preside over the Service of the Lamentations (Orthros of Holy Saturday) at the Metropolitan Church of Saint Gregory Palamas. Subsequently, he will lead the Epitaph procession, accompanied by the Military Band and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, as well as a ceremonial military guard, following the route: Agias Sofias Street – Nikis Avenue – Aristotelous Square.
At Aristotelous Square, between 21:00 and 21:30, the Epitaph processions from the following Holy Churches will arrive:
The Cathedral Pilgrimage Church of Hagia Sophia
The Church of Panagia Chalkeon
The Holy Monastery of Saint Theodora
The Church of Saint Nicholas (Tranos)
The meeting will take place below Mitropoleos Street, where the hymns of the Lamentations will be chanted and a prayer service will be held, creating a unique atmosphere of reverence and unity.
The event is organized with the support of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and aims to enhance the spiritual experience of the faithful, while also highlighting the authentic religious and cultural identity of the city.
Furthermore, on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 19:00, the Service of Love (Agape Vespers) will be celebrated at the Cathedral Church of Hagia Sophia, presided over by Metropolitan Philotheos. During the service, the Holy Gospel will be read in multiple languages, spreading the joyful message of the Resurrection throughout the world.
Following the conclusion of the service, a festive event will take place in the church courtyard, featuring traditional music and dances, while refreshments will be offered to all attendees.
