The local community of Epanomi is on high alert as residents and business owners prepare for an unprecedented protest on Tuesday, May 26. Following a joint decision by local authorities and business associations, all shops and local businesses will shut down from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM to allow everyone to join the massive rally at the town’s central square.

But what exactly has infuriated an entire region, forcing it into a two-hour total lockdown?

The "Secret" Plan Threatening Epanomi's Iconic Cape

The straw that broke the camel's back is a planned mammoth sand extraction operation in the marine area of Fanari (Cape Epanomi). According to reports, approval has been granted for the extraction of a staggering 4 million cubic meters of sand from the seabed. This massive volume of material is destined for construction works to expand the 6th pier at the Port of Thessaloniki.

Locals and the municipal authority are warning of an irreversible environmental disaster. The seabed excavation is projected to reach depths of up to 2 meters across an immense area of 3,500 acres—an area equivalent to the size of an entire city center!

The 3 Major Risks Alarming the Local Community

The protest flyer bearing the slogan "NO to sand extraction" perfectly captures the locals' fear for the future of their homeland. Environmental experts warn of devastating consequences:

  1. Annihilation of Seabed Life: The dredging operations will wipe out protected Posidonia oceanica (seagrass) meadows, destroying the marine ecosystem for decades.

  2. Severe Beach Erosion: Altering the sea currents risks completely washing away Epanomi's famous, tourist-heavy beaches.

  3. Economic Crash for Fishermen and Tourism: With murky waters and a destroyed seabed, fishing and tourism—the lifeblood of Epanomi during the summer—will suffer a fatal blow.
