Hiking and Its History Through the Centuries

Although hiking is today one of the most popular activities for recreation and wellness, its roots run deep in human history. Since ancient times, walking has been the main way of moving, exploring, and connecting people and places. Over the centuries, what once began as a necessity became a choice — a means of discovering nature, calming the mind, and reconnecting with oneself.

Today, hiking has evolved into a popular form of tourism, known as trekking or hiking tourism, attracting thousands of travelers from around the world. Organized routes, marked trails, and the variety of landscapes in Greece – from Mount Olympus to the gorges of Crete – make our country an ideal destination for those who love nature and authentic experiences.

The Physical and Mental Benefits of Hiking

Hiking is not merely a form of exercise. It is a holistic experience that brings balance, tranquility, and renewal.

For the body…

Regular hiking improves cardiovascular function, strengthens muscle endurance, posture, and balance. The constant variation of terrain — from uphill to downhill — activates the entire body without straining the joints, while also helping prevent various health issues and boosting the immune system.

For the mind…

Hiking offers a sense of mental release. Moving through nature reduces stress and anxiety levels, improves mood and concentration. Walking among forests, streams, and rocks soothes the mind and fills the eyes with images that are hard to forget. It is a form of “natural psychotherapy” that brings us closer to the essence of life and reminds us of the value of simplicity.ς.

Transnational Cooperation Project:

“We Utilize TOGETHER Cycling Tourism and Hiking in All Four Seasons”

AENOL (Development Agency of Larissa Prefecture) participates as a partner in the Transnational Cooperation Project titled “We Utilize TOGETHER Cycling Tourism and Hiking in All Four Seasons,” within the local LEADER/CLLD programme, sub-measure 19.3 of Measure 19 of the RDP 2014–2020.

The project also involves the Development Agency of Serres (ANESER S.A.) – as National Coordinator – and the French LAG Ventoux, sharing a common vision: to highlight the natural and cultural wealth of each region through soft, sustainable tourism activities.

The project’s goal is the exchange of experiences and best practices in promoting hiking and cycling tourism, strengthening the appeal of the three regions as all-year-round destinations.

Hiking on Mount Olympus

From the Paths of the Gods to the Paths of the Soul

The region of Western Olympus, where AENOL S.A. operates, is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Trails winding through beech forests, streams, and stone bridges connect small villages with monasteries and peaks that touch the clouds.

A remarkable example is the Karya–Sparmos route, a journey full of changing landscapes that combines natural beauty with cultural heritage. Along the way, hikers can enjoy the serenity of the forest, visit old chapels, and discover local products offered by hospitable residents.

Hiking on Olympus is not only a physical activity – it is a spiritual journey. Each step brings one closer to nature, and to oneself. This mountain, full of myths and powerful energy, continues to inspire and rejuvenate all who explore it.

The Role of Hiking in Sustainable Development

Hiking tourism serves as a pillar of sustainable development for many mountain regions in Greece. Unlike mass tourism, hikers tend to support small family-run accommodations, local taverns, and traditional products, directly boosting the local economy.

At the same time, the creation and maintenance of marked trails help protect the natural environment and preserve cultural heritage.

The cooperation between Greece and France within the LEADER programme embodies exactly this philosophy: tourism that respects nature, place, and people.

Info

We sincerely thank the Local Government Development Organization of Larissa Prefecture – “AENOL S.A.” for organizing and enabling us to explore the hiking trails of the Elassona – Western Olympus area.

This activity was implemented under Sub-measure 19.3 “Support for the implementation of cooperation (transnational and inter-territorial)” of Measure 19 (Community-Led Local Development – CLLD/LEADER) within the Rural Development Programme 2014–2020.
