Council of State Accepts Thermaikos Municipality’s Appeal Against Sand Extraction in Epanomi

The Council of State has accepted the appeal filed by the Municipality of Thermaikos against the planned extraction of sand from Cape Epanomi for construction works at the Port of Thessaloniki. The municipality described the ruling as a landmark decision for environmental protection.
According to an official announcement by the Municipality of Thermaikos, the Council of State accepted the municipality’s appeal concerning the extraction of four million cubic metres of sand from Cape Epanomi for the construction of Pier 6 at the Port of Thessaloniki.
The announcement states that “this judicial decision represents a milestone in the defence of the municipality’s marine and terrestrial environment.”
It also emphasises that this is “the first battle won in a long-term struggle” aimed at preventing environmental destruction at Cape Epanomi.
The Municipality of Thermaikos had submitted an application for annulment and suspension before the Council of State on 13 March 2026.
